🧾 Mobi Sales Tax Guide — Hosts

Your Responsibility as a Host

As a vehicle owner (“Host”) on Mobi, you are responsible for understanding and complying with all applicable tax laws in your state and local jurisdiction.

This may include:

  • Sales tax

  • Rental car tax

  • Peer-to-peer car sharing tax

  • Local or tourism taxes

Mobi provides the platform—but you are the vehicle owner and rental provider for tax purposes.

How Mobi Supports You

In certain states, Mobi may collect and remit taxes where required under marketplace facilitator or peer-to-peer car sharing laws.

However:

  • Not all states require Mobi to collect taxes

  • Tax rules vary significantly by state and locality

  • You remain ultimately responsible for your tax compliance and reporting

How Pricing Works

  • You set your rental price

  • Your listing may include taxes you are responsible for

  • Mobi may add applicable taxes at checkout where required by law

Trip Modifications & Additional Charges

Changes to bookings may impact taxes, including:

  • Extensions

  • Early returns

  • Cancellations

Additional charges (such as tolls or other fees) may also be subject to tax depending on the jurisdiction.

Best Practices for Hosts

We recommend:

  • Consulting a qualified tax professional

  • Keeping detailed records of rental income

  • Tracking taxes collected and taxes owed

  • Reviewing state guidance regularly for updates

State Tax Guidance (Official Resources)

Tax rules for vehicle rentals vary by state and locality. Hosts should refer directly to official state tax authority websites for the most accurate and up-to-date guidance.

You can find detailed information for your state through your state’s Department of Revenue, Taxation, or equivalent agency. Below is a complete list of official state tax authorities:

Important Note

This guide is provided for general informational purposes only and should not be considered tax advice. Mobi does not guarantee full tax coverage in every jurisdiction. Hosts are responsible for ensuring proper tax determination, reporting, and filing.
